I was living in Bedford at the time and I had decided to go to Coventry for a visit to see my mother and sisters. When I had arrived at my mother’s house my two sisters and my cousins were getting ready to go somewhere. They looked absolutely beautiful. At first I had assumed they were going to a wedding so I asked them where they were going and they replied they were going to church. I looked at them and I paused and asked them: “What do you mean you are going to church?” They answered that they were going to a church in Leicester and they asked me to join them. A part of me wanted to go with them because it seemed so exciting but I decided to stay because I had been driving all day and I was tired and I wanted to bathe the children and put them to bed. To make a long story short I went back to Bedford and thought no more of it.
A few days later I started getting phone calls from my family saying “because I love you I have to warn you that you are going to go to hell”.
I started laughing at them asking why was I going to hell. They said “You, Charlie and the children are going to hell if you don’t give your heart. You have to repent, give Jesus your heart and accept him as your Lord and Saviour”
A great fear came over me and I couldn’t help but wonder if they were right. I told them I didn’t want to talk about scripture because at that time in my life I was doing things that I’m not proud of. I thought I had no choice but I did have a choice. Everyone has a choice to do right and wrong and while I went to Mass on occasion I had stopped praying for years because I was angry at God after my father died. The only reason I had baptised my children was because my mother did it and my grandmother did it, so I did it because of family tradition because I wasn’t fully aware of the importance of baptism. I’m ashamed to say I knew nothing about my Catholic faith.
I decided that I would do some research and I discovered through studying the scriptures evidence for what the Catholic Church teaches to be true. For instance Saint Paul says in 1 Corinthians 4 verse 14-15 “I became your father in Christ through the gospels” and in Acts 16 verse 33 we hear that a whole family was baptised together. Then I found out that the Catholic Church is the only church that can be traced back to Jesus Christ because it was founded by Jesus Christ. In Matthew 16 verse 18 Jesus said “You are Peter and upon this Rock I will build my church” and we all know that Saint Peter was the first Pope. I bought a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church to find out once and for all the truth about what the Catholic Church actually teaches and I discovered I was already born again through my baptism as Saint Peter tells us in 1 Peter 3 verse 21.
Through all of this research and through God’s grace I started becoming a better Catholic Christian and practicing what I preached. I know that I am still a sinner but I try every day to be better. All glory and praise to God my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and the highest honour to the blessed Mother Mary for praying for me
